There was quite a period of time were it was thought that this album might never make it. The songs were almost all there not too long after the release of as is, but elaine's vocals started to disappear. Without going into the long story of it, surgery was eventually needed and then much recovery time afterwards. elaine's vocal range had changed slightly and as she says herself "I freaked out to begin with - I would open my mouth and what I thought was going to come out - didn't. It was scary for a while until I figured out I could start changing the way I sang a little and that helped a lot." With that going on, elaine decided to keep a lot of the scratch tracks (a scratch track is like a rehearsal track, the vocal track you put down to guide all the other instruments for the recording, and then you usually re-record the track at the end) from before the surgery to keep true to the songs. And then things got way better and new material found its way onto the new release too. "Being in that position put some things into perspective for me, and it really became about the music and the songs as opposed to simply how I sounded on the recording."

And you can hear that on every single song. You can't but be drawn into the song and the emotions it will force you to feel - regularly against your own will. No-one wants to bask in the misery of love lost, but everyone wants to know they're not alone, and listening to this album, you'll never feel alone. Fans have said that elaine can write about all the things that are in your head and heart but that no-one ever admits to or sings about. Obvious examples are the opening line to Already Dead - "I have this unnerving desire to hurt you, to make you feel some of this pain" or how about the simplicity of the opening line to How Does It Feel? - "I wish I could make you take a polygraph" But in typical elaine k fashion, it's not all doom and gloom. She has a way of turning the human condition into a humorous condition, posessing the ability to laugh at oneself when possible. Take the journey.

And so finally in late 2008, bare bones was done. And bare it is. It's raw, delicate, fierce, naked, charging, emotional and all that we've come to expect from elaine k.

Always having the desire to work with the musicians she has known for so long in Ireland as well as those in New York, elaine recorded almost 4 complete tracks in Ireland and the remainder in New York City. The result is truly an album. A journey. Sure, you can buy your favorite tracks on iTunes but we would strongly recommend getting the album and allow yourself the full ride.

Naturally it's recycled packaging as per elaine's insistence and devoid of extraneous packaging. That means no lyric booklet but we didn't leave you hanging, there is a digital booklet available (just click on the link above) where you can see pics and read the lyrics. The album also features some wonderful artwork by the very talented Ed Heck who himself is and elaine k fan and offered his works. elaine was delighted to be able to include his pieces, her personal favorite being the skeleton hand holding the guitar pick. She thinks you should buy the album just for that.... What leaps out is the music, the songs....and of course, elaine k
